Invincibles’ break-up is no bad thing

Did the shadow cast by the great 2003/04 side inhibit new players?

Invincibles’ break-up is no bad thing

Pires – Intimidating presence?

The new season is finally upon us and I just can't wait. Like many of you (I’m sure) I absolutely hate the close season. However I can't help but feel that unlike many of you I am actually excited and positive about the new season ahead.

Many Gooners I speak to of late seem to be dreading the season ahead, wondering just how Arsenal are going to play and cope without Henry, how we will compete for any trophies and will we qualify for the Champions League.

Maybe I’m too positive but I think the answer to the above is that we will play amazing football and cope very well without Henry, I think we can and will compete and win at least one trophy this year (and no, I’m not counting the Emirates Cup) and I think we will qualify for the Champions League.

And now for my reason why - which will really make you think I’m mad if you don't already! The key Invincibles have all left.

Yes a few of them (e.g. Kolo, Jens and Gilberto) remain but I’m referring to the real "heavyweights" of that Invincibles side. The players that cast shadows over our new generation of stars. The likes of Vieira, Henry, Pires, Bergkamp and Ljungberg. While these players have still been at the club people still expect, and in my opinion this can only be a burden, one which is unfair to place on our team’s young shoulders.

With these big names now gone (as sad as it may be) it’s time for our new stars to write their own piece of history. For the last two seasons we have become too reliant on Henry, similar to how we became too reliant on Wright. An Arsenal player has the ball with the option of two passes. The first is a team mate in space and the potential to create something. The other is Henry surrounded by at least two defenders. How often did that Arsenal player pick the wrong pass in fear that if they picked the right one a certain Arsenal legend would give them the infamous stare?

Now our team are free, they can play football to enjoy themselves, there is no expectation from anyone but themselves, their manager and maybe the odd fan like me who thinks we will succeed. The pressure is lifted, they can only achieve good things and surprise people. We are in a position which historically we love... people are writing Arsenal off.

So keep faith, season 07/08 is going to be a better one than some of you might think! After all our last home game of the season is Everton, and we all know what happens when our home campaign ends like that... double anyone? Let's just hope that Arsene Wenger is wearing that magic hat!!!
