A Feast Of Goals In Front Of The Few

Online Ed: Arsenal demolish Bate Borisov witnessed by circa 20,000

A Feast Of Goals In Front Of The Few

Pick Your Seat…

I’ll start with the highpoint of the evening. A text from Doktor Schneide, right back in form…

I’d chat to the bloke next to me about how poor Bate are, but it’s rude to shout.

There were certainly swathes of empty seats at the Emirates, notably in the upper tier, although you won’t have seen too much of that on TV. The game is on the season ticket, so 45,000 seats were sold before the draw for the Europa League group stage was even made. Arsenal claimed an attendance of 50,000 based on tickets sold. No wonder they no longer announce the crowd at the game. The derision that would have greeted such a claim yesterday evening might have been worth the admission price alone. There might have been just over 20,000 there, but it was probably a little under. The season tickets holders weren’t interested in coming. Neither was anyone else. One neighbour said his friend had offered his seat for free to 60 different people – and got no takers. A Europa League group game featuring the second stringers with nothing at stake on a chilly December night? No thanks.

Still, at least those that did turn up were treated to a few goals. Bate were so poor, at times one wondered whether they were in fact playing for a far eastern betting syndicate. A man in the row in front of me said he had put a fiver on both a 4-0 win (16-1) and a 5-0 win (33-1). He was optimistic at half-time but left after Elneny’s goal. He obviously wasn’t in on the plan.

The goals were spread around evenly – it was nice to see Debuchy score. His, Jack Wilshere’s and Elneny’s were the pick of the six. Captain Theo, OG and OG (that’s own goal and Olivier Giroud) also got on the scoresheet.

Really, there is not much more to say. At times it felt like a bit of an exhibition match. Things will get more interesting in the knockout stages, and we may even get a few more season ticket holders turning up if Arsenal draw more notable opposition. One interesting suggestion I heard was that all the fans who did make it last night should be guaranteed a Europa League Cup Final ticket in Lyon should Arsenal get that far. But, it’s a moot point. We all know they won’t.

I see TOF is whinging about having to plat at and being unfairly handicapped by the prem league schedulers (nothing like getting his excuses in early, just watch the AKB's run with it too) having to play at midday tomorrow, while others play later, it's because of your incompetence you old weasel the price you pay, Your Thursday night C5 now no one gives a fook about you, and you weren't whinging when you were scraping fourth and others had to do it. wenger out now.

1971Gooner, yes realistically we could, it's our level now, but we still won't, wenger will see to that, he'll fook it up along the line somewhere, like everything else, and anyway it's not the one he craves so could be treated with contempt like the Fa cup was, but no doubt (just like the Fa cup) would be spun as the bees knees and even better than his Holy Grail by his fans and followers, and indeed TOF himself.

It looked like the glory days of my first season in the Highbury schoolboys in 1975/76 where you could play hide and seek if the game got boring. Surely someone at board level must be concerned by the number of empty seats, even allowing for the meaningless game/cold December night/on TV anyway combination. Still, it’s a competition we could realistically win and a European trophy is long overdue, is it not?

Poor isn't the word Ed, more like pathetic, but it suited TOF and his second rate Dwarfs right down to the ground as they were able to stamp their authority on the game, and show great speeritt and menteel strength, you really couldn't make that up, (it's a pith they couldn't have done it against Man U and Mourniho) and of course the wengerites who listen to him and believe him the chance to get all hot and bothered again, a new low for the club. We want wenger out.

Although it was a nothing game it was good to see Jack in action. I thought he looked a heavier and less skilful version of Ozil to be honest. They were too poor to really be able to judge him.

There were not 20,000 people in that stadium last night. I would estimate 10-15,000 maximum. I could have watched the game from any vantage point in the stadium I wished. Had I been bothered to walk down to the clock end for the first half I could have had front row seats. As it was I watched the same game that I have seen for the last 10 years and left at half time, realising that an early night was preferable to more of the same. Tenders for the new TV contract are out and guess what, it is going to bring in 5.4 billion so they aren't remotely worried about empty stadiums. They should be but they aren't. They should be because 30-35,000 people who had paid large amounts of money to go to that game couldn't be bothered. Where the supporters in the stadium lead, the television audience will follow because the product, and not just Arsenal, has become tedious and lifeless. I'm going to see "89" tomorrow night in my local cinema. Proper footballers playing for teams with self respect. They are showing the game at Arsenal. I wonder if they will get a bigger gate than last night.

It’s never a bad thing to score 6 in a game, even if the opposition are basically dog ****. Fair play to those that attended, not a bad crowd for a dead rubber with our B team playing and on a freezing December night.

Fantastic performance by all, great atmosphere, all set now for at least 3 trophies. Arthur must stay forever!! Out with that evil plotter, Ivan. How are my egg whites coming on? Nurse!! Where's my medication?

Miles Gooner - I don’t think there’d have been any takers on this one. Tbf the Carabao Cup ( god that sounds awful ) cheap seat deal has given a boost to atmosphere. I think generally we are now post peak football in the UK. Arsenal will need to plan for this.

Surely it’s now time to allow season ticket holders to donate tickets so someone who can’t usually afford it can fill a seat. Win/win - bigger crowds, better atmosphere, better results and the club secures a new fan base.

Assume 20,000 were there: is that such a bad attendance for the reserves playing on a cold December night in a meaningless game? To those of us who were there in the '60s, '70s and '80s (I remember Sheff Utd one bright Saturday afternoon with Chippy Brady turning it on - and 14,477 there to watch....) it was a fairly remarkable turn out!
