I have been an Arsenal supporter for over 30 years & I would like to make the following comments on your article
1) The law is the law and in its current format fans are supposed to be seated. Don’t forget the law regarding smoking has changed, so according to you, people should be allowed to smoke if they want to, even though its against the law? This season, people caught smoking (unlike last year), will be ejected, no ifs or buts! (Ed’s note - Or butts for that matter!) (
2) Whilst "some" might prefer standing, they would be & do block the view of others around them, including young children! Also, I would point out that everyone has paid a substantial price for their seat, so therefore are within their rights to complain that others are blocking their view.
3) The stewards are only trying to keep the place SAFE for everybody & trying to ensure that EVERYBODY enjoys the game.
4) Re-locating people who find the constant getting up and down in sections where people do stand frequently a bit too much I would think is nigh impossible. The stadium is sold out every game, there are no "spare" seats to move these people to.
5) Stewards normally only get involved at all if either a complaint is made by another member of the public, or, if a potential "situation" could arise, which may become dangerous.
6) As regards abusive behaviour, again this would only prompt a response from a steward if a complaint from someone nearby was received, or again if a potential "situation" could arise. To say that if a steward doesn’t like someone, they will use reasons of swearing and abusive behaviour to eject them is absurd! People are ejected because they have ignored requests or instructions to curb their behaviour & have become obnoxious to everyone around them.
7) Your comment that some stewards get off on the power of the dayglo jacket and turn into mini-Hitlers? If you have cause to complain about a steward, then take his/her coat number (all are unique & have the same coat for the duration of the season), find the nearest supervisor & report it to them. If you're still not happy then write in to Stadium Management.
8) Remember... The stewards give up their own time to attend formal certified training and be there to help put on an event at the stadium. Don't knock them - help them!
You may have guessed, I am now a steward!!!!
