Get this - Arsenal can win the title

File under: Glass half full, as one writer believes the Gunners will be right in the mix at the season’s end

Get this - Arsenal can win the title

Winning the last title at the Lane. Good memories, let’s have more…

Everyone I talk to tells me the same old crap. This season, "It's gonna be Chelsea or Man U, and I think Liverpool will be up there with them. I also reckon Spurs'll break into the top four." To say bollocks to this is a bit harsh. Definitely, you expect that lot to do well, but this is how I see it.

Let's go in last year's finishing order (excluding Arsenal). Man U definitely have a good team this season. No question about that. Hargreaves is a backup to Carrick (or vice versa) and they're both good players. Tevez and Rooney the same, but they're great players. Meanwhile, I hate to say it, but Ronaldo's a fantastic player (maybe Nani or Anderson are backups for him). With red nose in charge, I do believe it's unlikely that they will get complacent. For me, they're the number one threat this season, even if they drew at the weekend.

Chelsea though are a different kettle of fish. Mourinho's an asshole, but you've got to rate him as a manger. His record is fantastic. The man hasn't lost at home for 340 years. Still though, with a less defensive team he's more likely to lose. If the Brummies didn't have Sideshow Bob in goal on Sunday, they could have well nicked a point. What with Roman's big nose and all the fancy dans at Chelsea, it's possible that it all falls apart. Meanwhile, people remember from last season that Chelsea aren't invincible (that's us anyway), and I can see Jose getting more and more annoyed as the season goes on. Add on to that the fact that they keep getting tipped for the title (e.g. Hansen), they're still shite in Europe (well, they can't get to the final), and Mourinho's mind tricks are old hat, the pressure will just keep building. I say they crack. Second place if they're lucky, Jose to leave by Christmas if things start going pear shaped (in which case they could finish anywhere).

On to Liverpool. I could go on forever about that lot. Liverpool won't do better than third. I don't care who they buy, it's going to be same old Liverpool. Away from home, they're going to draw. I don't know what it is about Rafa, but he can't win away from home. They bought Torres, but he's hardly a proven Premiership striker. He'll need to settle in, and while he does that, they'll be drawing away from home. The rest are also hardly anything special. Babel's said to be very good, and for me, if anyone's going to save that lot it'll be him, but maybe he does, and maybe he doesn't.

Finally, Spurs are said to break into the top four. Gimme a break. Please. Spurs'll do this season what they do every season. Flatter to deceive. Yes, OK, they'll win a couple of games 4-3. They'll go on about Berbatov being the dog's bollocks and Huddlestone the next great English midfielder, but they'll still have Ledley at the physio's and they'll still lose at Newcastle, Man City and West Ham. Hell, they lost to Sunderland (though I expect top ten from that lot. Keano's an animal, but he's bloody charismatic and he's going to come good). I'm writing Spurs off right now, so that's enough about them methinks.

Now, on the mightly Arsenal. Typical comments about the mighty Arsenal: "wonderful football, but they can't finish", "they've lost their talismanic striker", "they're soft" and the number one comment, I hear day in, day out "it's a very talented squad, but they've got no strength in depth and I just think it's too much to expect from such a young team". Well, all of this might be true, but they're still going to win the Premiership. Simply because everyone's written them off. No one I know expects anything from Arsenal. They've all lost faith, just as Mr Whitcher did over the weekend . They think Arsene's cracking under the stress (so the man's eyes are red and watery... but they were always red and watery!).

Well, this is what I think. The boys have had two seasons learning how to play hard, and they're getting better at it. Last year, we smacked Blackburn (a couple of times). We create chances like nobody's business. The finishing is getting better, especially with Van Persie back, and I really like the look of Bendtner. Meanwhile, if Eduardo is anything near what he's cracked up to be, I expect a lot of goals from Arsenal. A couple of 5-0s for sure, and one of them against Bolton. Mark my words. Everyone's going to concentrate on the Scousers, Man U and Chelsea, but come March you'll be hearing this a lot: "you know, I really didn't expect Arsenal to be where they are this time of year, especially with Thierry gone, but I suppose it's true what they say, Arsene knows".

Now, would I wager my house that Arsenal are going to win the Premiership this year? Maybe not... but I've already placed a fat bet that we finish second or better.
