Can Eduardo fit into Arsene's starting eleven? I for one would like to see it, but I've got a feeling that he wont be a regular starter and therefore suffer as a consequence.
We all wanted Wenger to go out and buy Eto'o or Torres or Villa when Henry was sold to Barca. We all felt we needed a big name experienced goalscorer to soften the blow of losing our talismanic genius. However we all knew deep down that this is not the Arsene way and just would not happen. Instead, without rumour or gossip, Eduardo da Silva was signed on a mundane Monday morning on July 2nd with everyone asking the question, who is he?? Soon the penny dropped that he was the Brazilian born Croat that scored against England with a looping header over the fatboy keeper. After further memory trawling he'd scored against us in the Champions League qualifier last season. His stats were soon being posted on every website going detailing his awesome goalscoring record in the Croatian league, but could he cut it in the Premiership was the question on everyone lips.
In the previous two seasons we have struggled to put away a number of chances during games that has eventually cost us and we dropped many points along the way, culminating in two disappointing fourth place finishes. So Eduardo was to be the saviour, the striker that knocked in the fumbles from the keeper and the scrappy goals. A selfish attacker that, given a chance inside the box, would have only one thing in his mind - to smash it on the back of the net.
This is the main reason that I would like to see Eduardo start alongside Van Persie. Van Persie has the brilliance to perform the sublime, if not unbelievable, at times to win us the game (a la Inter Milan) so he must be first choice. But I hope and feel Eduardo has the opposite, the not so pretty scrappy goal in a game with few chances to help us collect all three points. But he is also much more than just that. He's a natural goalscorer and they seem to be a dying breed in modern day football. With skill and a great work ethic he'll give you everything for 90 minutes. Although we have only seen glimpses of his abilities and I'm basing much of my praise for him on his scoring record (to score 34 goals in 32 games in a season in any league shows that he can take his chances!) I believe he has to start ahead of Adebayor.
Adebayor has his own qualities, he can win headers, holds the ball up well and is strong and pacy. But he's not a goalscorer, we all know that, and seems lazy at times. Every time he's put through one-on-one, I always find myself backing the keeper to make a save. He would be a great sub to bring on to help change a game if we are struggling to break down the opposition defence with our beautiful football. But can two skilful strikers work together in a partnership?? Will Van Persie spot Eduardo's movement and if so will he thread the ball through?? And vice versa? Does a skilful goalscoring striker need a strong towering partner to hold the ball up and put him in at the right time?? I believe Wenger likes to have a skilful goalscorer and an accomplice to feed him chances – e.g, Anelka and Bergkmap, Henry and Bergkamp and now Van Persie and Adebayor. This is why I can see Eduardo suffering on the bench.
We've missed the goals from the midfield in recent years, which was around 20-25 a season from Freddie and Bobby. And if we can get these goals back through two goalscoring strikers and Hleb, Cesc and Rosicky weighing in as well, we can again be genuine title contenders. I'm sure Wenger will get the right mix and succeed, he always does. But its Van Persie and Eduardo as our strike force for me!
