Spurs Food Poisoner Revealed?

Online Ed: It could only be one man. The ghost of Sir Henry Norris just could not resist a parting salvo for Highbury’s farewell

Spurs Food Poisoner Revealed?

Cooper: Not Highbury’s most significant Henry, oh no

Well, as famed Spurs fan Richard Littlejohn would say, you couldn’t make it up. The twists and turns of Sunday 7th May will long be remembered. The weather forecast was iffy, but there was to be no p*ssing on this parade. The general consensus was that the only thing that could have improved a near perfect day was Thierry Henry signing a new contract at the culmination of the closing ceremony. But hey, that can wait. And if TH14 departs after recent events, it can only be because he was always going to move on, as after yesterday, there is no further case that needs stating for the reason any pro would want to play for this team in front of these fans.

I was actually outside the ground at 7 on Sunday morning, and it was absolutely beautiful. The stillness in the air, the smell of blossom on the trees and the East Stand just standing there, imposing, impressive, as it has for decades. With those unique windows at the side. About to serve it’s designed purpose for one last time. The police were a little heavy handed, but Avenell Road certainly could not have coped with the extra thousands that wanted to be there in the two hours before kick off, so the operation was sensible, if at times a little chaotic.

And then, the news from the Tottenham camp. Almost too good to be true. Surely, this was the ghost of Sir Henry Norris, getting busy in the Hotel Marriot kitchen, playing his part to ensure that Highbury’s final day would be one of drama, and ultimately ensuring Arsenal finished above Spurs, the way things should be. Call it the natural order of things. The chairman who brought the club to Highbury, did some post-War shenanigans to get Arsenal into the top flight and Tottenham relegated, was not going to let the day pass without some involvement. I mean, what other explanation could there be for the food poisoning? A Gooner in the hotel kitchen? Well, that would be highly unsporting, unthinkable, a bit like taking advantage of the right side of Arsenal’s defence when Emmanuel Eboue is obviously lying injured on the floor.

The matches at both Upton Park and Highbury had plenty of drama. Wigan threatening to poop the party until Thierry Henry ensured that, as the old North Bank saw an Ian Wright hat-trick on its final day, so the stadium itself would be treated to one on its goodbye. As for Upton Park, the missed Teddy Sheringham penalty had everyone at the Arsenal match cursing. I’ve seen it since and I am still not absolutely convinced he wanted to score the thing, but thankfully, it proved an irrelevance.

The fans at Highbury played their part. The t-shirts were a wonderful idea, so much more effective than the holding up of cards, and almost everyone put them on to create a magnificent effect, even the Wigan fans. Credit to them for playing their part in the most fantastic of days. And those giant heads – Tony Adams may have cried off in his pretentious self-indulgence, but his giant head probably gave us more entertainment than the man himself would have mustered. And what the hell, if he’d been interviewed with some of the other former legends, the countdown clock would probably have had to be re-set.

I could go on at greater length, but your online ed’s other half wants to get away for a five day caravan break as of an hour ago and I’m getting my ear chewed off here! Normal service resumed on Friday 12th! Enjoy the week as much as we all enjoyed Sunday.

And finally. Sir Henry. Thanks for everything!
