The first order of business is to thank everyone who responded this year, as a massive 2,000 votes rolled in to Gooner Towers. After the highs of recent years it was a largely forgettable season on the pitch, though there was perhaps more than ever to talk about off it. The feeling is that the club is at a crossroads and opinions differ wildly as to whether we’re going downhill fast or onward and upward. Only time will tell, but while we’re waiting let’s see what we do agree on.
Arsenal player of the season 2006-07
1. Cesc Fabregas
2. Gilberto Silva
3. Gael Clichy
4. Robin van Persie
5. Kolo Toure
The king is dead, long live the king! After winning it for the last four seasons Henry finished this poll as he finished his Arsenal career: as a lame duck. The question is, how long will Cesc’s reign last? With Thierry gone, the Spanish giants are already circling like vultures over what they see as the decaying carcass of Arsenal, trying to pick the best meat off the bones. UEFA appear oblivious to this public tapping up, which frankly would make Jose Mourinho blush. 93 per cent put Cesc somewhere in their top three, with 60 per cent naming him as number one, so this wasn’t the least bit close. That Van Persie could miss half the season and still finish fourth demonstrates that overall we were well below par.
Most disappointing Arsenal player 2006-07
Julio Baptista - 66%
Alexander Hleb - 18%
Philippe Senderos - 6%
Freddie Ljungberg - 6%
Given some of Baptista’s performances, I can only say that the 34 per cent who didn’t vote for him must have had very low expectations! Hleb also failed to produce the goods far too often, and as he’ll still be around we must hope for a vast improvement this season. The only surprise for me is the lack of Adebayor in this list. Perhaps low expectations and a few vital shinned goals saved him. Dishonourable mentions go to Lehmann, Gallas and Henry, with one respondent voting (with some justification) for “all of them”.
Most improved Arsenal player in the last 12 months
Gael Clichy - 42%
Emmanuel Adebayor - 20%
Justin Hoyte - 19%
Robin van Persie - 14%
Personally I thought Clichy was pretty damn good BEFORE last season. He’s quick, tackles well, never does anything stupid either with the ball or in the Jens Lehmann sense, and always ably deputised for Cashley when required. If I were him I’d be a bit insulted by this. Adebayor, on the other hand… well, presumably 20 per cent of Gooners thought that he couldn’t kick with EITHER foot 12 months ago. Gilberto also got a handful of nominations, along with Djourou, Walcott and even Fabregas. There was one vote for Freddie, which I assume was a joke.
Best team performance of the season
Man Utd (A) - 46%
Reading (A) - 21%
Liverpool (A) Carling Cup - 11%
Liverpool (A) FA Cup - 11%
A clear winner. Beating the champions-elect away is always a bit special, even more so in front of 75,000 Mancs. Reading away was an absolute stroll once Henry scored inside two minutes, but you’d expect us to stroll it against such humble opposition, surely? Man Utd at home also got a couple of per cent of the vote, a few more than CSKA Moscow at home. I can’t remember much of that one, as I think I had my head in my hands for virtually the whole second half. Every time I looked up someone was falling on their arse two yards out while the ball bobbled past the post again.
Most disappointing team performance of the season
Sheff Utd (A) - 29%
PSV Eindhoven (H) - 28%
Liverpool (A) League - 16%
Fulham (A) - 13%
So a dire League match against a team not fit to wipe Hleb’s backside, never mind grace the same field as Henry, is slightly more disappointing than being knocked out of the Champions League. Difficult call really, as these two matches were disappointing for very different reasons. What is clear from both cases is that a hell of a lot more fighting spirit is required if the key to the trophy cabinet is going to be needed come 2008. The Liverpool votes are a reaction to the cup games as much as anything else – how often have we gone to Liverpool expecting to win? “Too many to mention” got a few votes, needless to say.
Best three Arsenal goals 2006-07
1. Van Persie, 2nd v Charlton
2. Henry v Blackburn
3. Henry v Man Utd
A slight error with the online options meant that a huge majority, three quarters of respondents, were actually tricked into voting for the less special goal that Van P scored that day, but hey, we knew what you meant. And several dozen people were smart enough to point out that they knew what we meant, even if we didn’t. If you know what I mean. Anyway, the volley from the edge of the box, which may or may not have been off a shinpad, and which rocketed into the top corner. Well you don’t get many of them to the pound, not since the other Dutchman left. (No, not Glenn Helder.) Oh, and an honourable mention to Walcott for his Carling Cup final goal – come on Theo, 20 more this season.
Who would you most like Arsène Wenger to sign this summer?
1. Samuel Eto’o
2. Franck Ribéry
3. Kaka
4. Michael Owen
The top two were a long way clear of the rest, and you can well imagine Arsène being interested, but probably more so five years ago than now they are established. No mention of any player we have actually signed, at the time of writing. Actually I don’t know why we bother with this question, because the day Wenger signs anyone we hope or expect him to is probably the day he loses his touch. Quite a few people would be happy with anyone world-class, preferably over the age of 22, and some would most like Arsène himself to sign a new contract. I think I’m with them.
Which current Arsenal player would you least like to be sold?
Cesc Fabregas - 72%
Thierry Henry - 21%
Kolo Toure - 5%
No surprise here. The new talisman must stay! Let’s hope eight-year contracts are worth the paper they’re written on these days.
Which current Arsenal player would you most like to be sold?
Jose Reyes - 36%
Jeremie Aliadiere - 24%
Alexander Hleb - 17%
Freddie Ljungberg - 12%
No great surprises here either. Some say that Freddie is only staying because no one else wants to pay him 60 grand a week – that’s £2 per home game for every supporter in the ground. Other suggestions were Senderos, Gallas, Lehmann, Flamini, Eboue, Adebayor and Henry, in that order. Baptista would have been a popular choice, but votes for him didn’t count as we don’t actually own the fella, which is kind of a pre-requisite for selling him.
Should Arsenal sell Thierry Henry?
Not at any price - 51%
£30 million - 21%
£20 million - 20%
£40 million - 8%
