Would David Dein ever consider Spurs?

File under mischievous. George Graham did it. What chance Red & White Holdings give up and decide to go elsewhere?

Would David Dein ever consider Spurs?

For sale? Just don’t ask about the previous owners!

David Dein and his new business associates have set up an acquisition company with one sole aim - to take over at Arsenal. Dein’s raw ambition has started to show and the poor attempt to link his friendship with Arsene Wenger as a major reason why the manager signed his new three deal has swung many (myself included) firmly on the side of the current board.

So the ‘Red & White Holdings’ company is all dressed up but suddenly has nowhere to go whilst the Arsenal board are showing some real cohesion. It looks like Ken Friar is carrying on his fine work with the new stadium to become Arsene’s support in the transfer market and in effect a director of football matters if not a “director of football”. Arsenal are beginning to set the agenda rather than defend against gossip and sensationalism.

So what does Mr Usmanov do…? Wait for the Arsenal board to crack or look at another club that whilst being much smaller would be cheaper to buy at about £250 million and would give Dein the chance to show the Arsenal board and fans just what they could have had if they had capitulated to our ex vice-chairman’s wishes.

Would Levy sell to a Dein-led consortium? Impossible you might think. Surely Dein would never go for Totteringham? No? Well that was what we thought about George Graham with his cannon-embossed patio! Stranger things have happened.

The Spuds are ripe for takeover, huge sums of money spent chasing a dream that Levy probably now realises is beyond the current club’s set up. A report in ‘The People’ that suggested Levy may sell is no basis for believing a takeover will happen at White Hart Lane but a really “miffed” former vice-chairman of Arsenal and a ruthless Russian businessman let down badly by his advisors could grab such a deal as a face-saving exercise and we could yet see the sartorial Mr Dein changing tack and colours completely.

Okay, probably wide of the mark, but a great exercise in “what if…?”
