The Foreign Players At Arsenal Debate

Is simple application the difference between English and imported players?

Walcott: Any word from Pardew on Theo?

I am writing this article in response to what has been said by Alan Pardew when he was quoted as saying, "I saw a headline saying Arsenal are flying the flag for Britain in the Champions League but I had to wonder where the British involvement was when I saw the team” after Arsenal got through to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

I for one will not give a hoot if we win the Champions League, what matters to me is that you want to play for Arsenal. Cesc Fabregas has been at the club since he was fifteen.

First of all I would like to know since when have Arsenal pledged to supply the England team with all their players? When I last looked there are 20 clubs in the Premiership to start with.

As an English Gooner whose parents are from the Caribbean I see both sides of the argument. I would like to see more British players in our team but not just for the sake of it.

I would have to admit that we have let a lot go, but please tell how many have gone to a better team than Arsenal.

Also the fact is that both Sol and Ashley are injured and Walcott was on the bench, Kerrea Gilbert is also injured after breaking through to the first team recently. David Bentley wanted to play first team football as well as Jermaine Pennant and others.

I heard an ex-professional footballer on the radio say that said that part of the problem is that young players today want everything now.

I can’t blame them for wanting first team football but I would like to point out that if Matthew Upson (who I wished had stayed) was patient he could have taken the place of Martin Keown when he retired in 2004.

I could go on and on about others but for now I’ll keep it short.

Maybe it is application and other factors of the players rather that the nationality of the players which is a factor. After all we do not see these players day in day out like Arsene does. To quote Arsene, "When you represent a club, for me it's about values and qualities, and it's not about passports”
