“Intelligence and stupidity have no limits but sometimes stupidity is louder.”
Recently Arsene Wenger spoke out about the idiocy of the Aston Villa supporters who were singing about Eduardo's injury the other week but as a club we need to look closer to home when it concerns singing – especially where it is racist, anti-semitic and embarrassing to all true Arsenal supporters.
I was lucky enough to attend the Champions League match against AC Milan at the San Siro and thanks to the wonderful performance by the Arsenal team I had a fantastic trip to Italy.
However, my match day experience was very much marred by the actions and behaviour of a few so-called Arsenal fans.
On the day of the Milan match there was a definite party atmosphere as we fans took advantage of the unseasonal weather and congregated in the Duomo square in the city centre where we impressed the tourists with our rousing singing, flags and banners.
But when making my journey to the San Siro things changed.
My sister and I were waiting for the shuttle bus to take us to the stadium with a number of other fans when a few started singing anti-semitic chants.
They were making extremely distasteful references to the holocaust, chanting about Hitler being a Gooner and changing words of other more innocent songs to include words such as “y***o.”
One of the other Arsenal fans said it best when he announced: “I am a born and bred third generation Arsenal supporter and I am Jewish. I should not have to listen to this.”
He is right.
But the (worryingly young) minority singing these awful songs would not listen and kept chanting, as well as throwing in more racist chants about Italians and Asians – and even racist songs about one of our own players (Emmanuel Adebayour).
And when we arrived at the ground and were waiting to enter the stadium one of them shouted to a black member of the stewarding staff “Let us through you monkey.”
I have never been more embarrassed and disgusted at the behaviour of my fellow Arsenal supporters and thankfully once we inside the ground I didn't hear any more of it.
Many people attempt to defend anti-semitic chanting by reminding us that Spurs fans regularly refer to themselves as the “y** army”.
If they are ignorant enough to do so then let them – but we don't need to stoop to that level.
There is still plenty to sing about where that rabble from up the road are concerned – we can remind them they haven't won the league in nearly half a century while we've been named champions at their ground – twice, we can stand up to show our general dislike of them and we can even sing about the Pope's view of their team.
Or maybe we could try channeling our energy into cheering on our own team and coming up with songs for our players who don't often hear their name chanted around Ashburton Grove (what does rhyme with Alex Hleb?).
I know the club have taken steps to prevent racist chanting including implementing the controversial text message complaints system but I believe more needs to be done.
Could there not be a zero tolerance policy where if stewards heard this sort of racist language the fans concerned would be ejected and have their memberships rescinded?
I realise that 60,000 fans are a lot to police and this sort of behaviour has been going on for many years but if strong action was taken then an example could be made of these idiots.
