Arsenal supporters are obviously disappointed with the way things have gone in the last few matches. There is an argument that we are still in a much better position than we would ever have thought we would be in at the beginning of the season. I would agree with this to a certain extent but that was before I knew we had money to spend.
At the beginning of the season I was resigned to the fact that with the new stadium finances, we would not be able to compete with the other "big" teams in the Premiership in terms of buying quality players. My priorities would have been a proven goalscorer, a central defender and a player who could have played wide left.
As we all know the team have played brilliantly and probably beyond expectations for most of the season. However, it is the "beyond expectations" part that has been worrying all along. I think most of us have been waiting and wondering when or if a "blip" would come. Unfortunately it has happened and with the small squad we have it is worrying to think it’s that which could destroy the chances of any silverware this season. We live in hope.
What is upsetting about the whole season though, is discovering a few weeks into it that we did have money to spend. Why on earth didn't we try and buy Fernando Torres? Imagine him in an Arsenal shirt getting on the end of passes from his Spanish team mate Cesc! We would be out of sight by now. Adebayor tries hard and he has his moments but he is not a top quality striker. He gets caught offside too much, he faffs about on the wing, he doesn't look up enough and he very rarely turns his marker. RVP is injury prone though he is quality when fit. Bendtner has potential but hasn't really "shown" in most of the matches he's played. Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea have far better quality up front than us and yet Wenger says he is unlikely to buy another striker in the summer!
I really feel that we lack a real hero up front. Someone you feel knows exactly what they're doing in front of goal. Someone you can rely on to come up with something special even when the team aren't playing well. Someone like Wrighty or Thierry. Torres could have been that player. Admitted, with a Spanish manager maybe Liverpool were favourites to sign him, but when a quality player comes up that Utd and Chelsea aren't interested in we should have pulled out all the stops to get him. We need someone up front to get the pulses racing again!
I think Torres is going to be the difference between the two teams when we play Liverpool in the Champions league. I hope I'm proved wrong.
And please Arsene, spend some of our money on some real quality up front in the summer. We're paying to see Arsenal win silverware now. Not in some vision for the future
