Arsenal have officially become the draw specialist. The team specializes in not losing but not winning either. A draw is good for the morale of the team at a certain stage in the league - mostly the beginning of the season when a loss can dampen the spirits. But at the run-in when you are still title contenders it is close to losing.
If you analyse a draw mathematically what does it suggest? The positive spin on it would be if instead of losing two points you gained one. How long can you keep this logic? The positive spin I'll reiterate is that it’s better during the first half of the season. If you draw a match with say Man Utd when leading the Premiership on points it is a good result. It cancels out the two teams. There is no net loss or gain and as fans we would rather cancel each other than have lose ground.
Me and one of my mates were discussing this all the way in Pakistan about the possible wins and losses we could afford. This was when we were leading the table by six points and came to the conclusion a draw with Man Utd would be a good result. Arsene will play his 4-5-1 formation and the game would have a draw written all over it. It taught me a lesson: never count your chickens before they hatch.
As it stands we have to win at Old Trafford and with the form that we are in it will be a daunting task. If last year we did not win enough against the lower end of the table clubs, this year little has changed – there have been way too many draws. A couple of weeks ago on this website someone had written three draws is like two losses and a win and I thought not really. I was considering that we had not lost but now it is not about losing it is about points.
It takes me come back to my original point. While draws are good in the first half, they are not feasible in the latter stages of a league. Every team loses during the course of a league. The Invincibles were an anomaly, they broke the record, but this is not going to happen again anytime soon.
Why are we drawing so many matches? The answer for me I think is simple. We have a thin squad, not enough rest given to the players, mental and physical fatigue does creep in. We are humans and so are these football players. We should have had a big squad, I hate to admit this, but a squad like Chelsea or Man Utd or Liverpool. You have the option of resting players and bringing in equally good ones to produce the goods. I am not going to question Arsene Wenger and his transfer policy. The club might have other plans, the man himself may have other plans, I can’t say. But the squad is something that needs to be assessed, even if a***holes like Diarra will complain about not playing much.
There is though a positive note about being draw specialist. Go and get a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Draws are a funny thing, they usually annoy you but sometimes you hope for a scoring draw.
