Bad refereeing decisions DO NOT even themselves out

But what’s required to counter this ill-fortune might just be the return of Bobby Pires!

Bad refereeing decisions DO NOT even themselves out

Peter Frojdfeldt: Thanks very much

Birmingham’s last minute penalty that should not have been given
Middlesbrough’s goal was offside
Chelsea’s first goal was offside
We were denied a clear penalty last week in the first leg
We lost to a penalty which never was at Anfield
Result: at least 6 points denied us, and we are not in the Champions League semi final.
(Ed’s note – To say nothing of the pen that Cesc should have had in the Prem game on Saturday)

Maybe our squad is too small, too many players are knackered, Senderos should have stopped Hyppia, sure we need to defend better etc. etc.

I know all that – but this season, the luck has not been with us. Sorry, but I feel cheated. Let’s hope Barcelona can survive v Man Utd and then beat whoever gets through.

Ed’s note - I received a further email from Ian Henry this morning, the contents of which are partly a response to my own online editorial on the game at Anfield. He wrote…

My email last night was a very angry cathartic one, but which I stand by.

I never mind losing to a better team or to a cracking goal; had we lost 2-1 to the Torres goal, I’d say well done Liverpool, good luck. It’s not the losing, but the manner of the other side’s winning which I object to.

A few other thoughts in no particular order:

Hoyte: Good enough for the Carling Cup, most FA Cup, half the Premiership… a player like that has a role in the club, any club; play him against Derby, Fulham etc – keep Sagna for the bigger matches. Incidentally, it’s notable that Liverpool have no faith in Finnan for the big matches at right back, so Carragher has to play there. Shows what a class player he is and what Toure ought to be able to be; I just think he is knackered.

Similarly, train Traore in the same manner – in other words, rotate sensibly

Senderos; at fault for goal one, yet another high profile howler; somehow, he will never be accepted as a top flight player at Arsenal, but I cannot see Wenger selling him this summer. He should go, but if anyone goes it will be Djourou, unfortunately

Midfield; if the Fabregas-Flamini axis is the future, which I think it is, then we need a replacement pairing, not just one player but two who work together; so – Song and Diaby? Denilson and Merida? The only other question is do we buy an experienced central midfielder to replace Gilberto – I would try and keep him anyway, but if not, there must be another similar player out there.

Wide players; Of course Eboue should go, and a proper right side midfielder or winger should come in – Walcott has to play as a striker in my mind; left side, Rosicky if fit, or maybe another purchase

Strikers; I don’t think we have a problem here actually, and I would keep Bendtner, as he does weigh in with important goals; he has been very unlucky this year and I think Wenger will keep him.

Captaincy… Is Gallas the right man long term? Even short term? Would Flamini be better? Will Gallas stay I wonder?

So what would I do over the summer:

Buy another keeper – Joe Hart of Man C springs to mind; or if Fabianski is the future, then an older head from Europe somewhere as back up

Buy an experienced big stopper – not sure who, but I have always liked Juan or Lucio; there is a very tall Brazilian at Bremen, Naldo – he’s 6 feet 6 inches

Bring in an experienced midfielder if Gilberto goes

Full backs; keep the faith – Sagna and Clichy with Gilbert (assuming Hoyte goes) or Djourou or Toure as back up on the right and Traore or Gibbs on the left

Buy two wide players – at the moment I can’t think who, but then again I am sure Arsene has an idea
