Senderos – Ok whilst Kolo was in Africa, but…

Well, I spent all day yesterday rehashing Tuesday night's game. A really devastating defeat. Here's my analysis

1. Definitely not our best game. The first 25 minutes were Arsenal-type football. Clearly, when Senderos’ mistake led to the Hyypia goal our fragile confidence was badly wounded. I think this relates largely to our poor record in the last 11 matches, only two wins. We seemed to tire in the second half as well. It's really the story of our season - we played stunning "total" type football at times, but we didn't have the depth & maturity to overcome some key injuries and sustain a long, grueling season.

2. Although he played better at times last night, Eboue is not a first team right winger. His lack of quality has been an eyesore on the right side of the pitch all season. He flops at inopportune times and is a poor decision maker. I really think he should be sold - teams may still give a significant $$ for him, remembering his 06 CL display and hoping that he might be better served as a natural back (in my mind, he's nowhere near Sagna's class).

3. Senderos was responsible for the first two goals. He fell asleep on Hyypia and gave Torres, a world class striker, too much space to operate close to the box. Although I think he stepped up nicely in Toure's ANC absence, his lapses cost us the match last night - no ifs ands or buts. Hopefully, he learns from his terrible mistakes.

4. I'm not convinced that Almunia is a starting goalkeeper. Although he can't directly be held responsible for any of the goals, his inability to catch Abeloa's cross led to the corner that cost us the first goal and turned the match around

5. Walcott has shown that he deserves more playing time. His performances in the second half of the season have been, at times, a revelation. Although he lacks the physical strength to compete as a centre forward in the Premier League, his pace is blistering and he has the technique to dominate as a winger.

6. Flamini is the guts of our time. We can't let him go to Juve on a Bosman. I hope that Arsene recognizes this and locks him up to a long term deal. Diarra's sale to Portsmouth was unfortunate. He could have provided excellent cover for Flamini and would have allowed us to give Fab/Flam more rest the second half of the year when the team wore down. It's time to sell Gilberto. Although he wasn't miserable last night, he's lost a step and can't play Arsenal football any longer.

7. Looking ahead, I think we need to secure the following - an underrated GK who can compete with Alumnia for the number 1 Jersey; Lehmann is clearly toast this summer.

A centre back with the height and speed to complement Toure/Gallas (maybe Philippe Mexes from Roma - might be too expensive).

A defensive midfielder to provide cover for Flam/Fab (maybe Loic Perrin) - I still have faith that Denilson can develop, but I think it might be time to send him on loan for a more prolonged run of games so that he can develop. I would like to see Song get some games down the stretch to see if he's ready to step up to the role, as his ANC performance & limited Carling Cup duties may suggest.

A ‘natural’ left winger - Rosicky will be back, but he's right footed and neither he, nor RVP nor Eduardo (assuming he returns) is a natural left sided player. We've often lacked the width of the left side needed to open up the seams for a short passing game near the box. I like the clips that I've seen of Ben Arta from Lyon - he's amazingly skilled and quick - I hope that Arsene is willing to spend the $$ needed to secure him; although Vela and Merida might be ready to make a difference on the left side, I'm not sure that they'll be ready to provide the depth we need as soon as next year.

An additional goalscorer who can complement Ade - Eduardo was developing a nice relationship with Ade in midseason, hard to know what to expect from him next year. I don't think that Bendtner and Ade can play together (personal differences aside)

I suspect that Lehmann, Gilberto, Hoyte, Eboue (touch wood) will be toast next year. I hope that Arsene considers sending Denilson out on a year long loan to develop. It might be time to move Djourou as well if he's not ready to contribute. I really can't see us paying for Robinho, Quaresma, Martins, or some of the other high profile players that have been mentioned - and truth be told, I'm not sure that any of them would be a great fit. I have faith in Arsene. I hope he realizes that we have holes that should be filled this summer and takes a long, hard look at the squad we fielded at Anfield.

That's my 0.02…
