Kolo Toure looks like a startled rabbit and seems to be still suffering from that unbelievable performance in the African Nations Cup. He is not a confident player and needs a solid, calm authority next to him. Gallas is not that man, he showed himself a good leader when things are going well but a poor example when things got sticky. When he led the universal ignoring of Bendtner's goal at the weekend (whatever they may think about him) it spoke volumes for a lack of leadership and real team spirit.
Adebayor will always get a few goals but he is not in the same league as Torres. Yes, he runs about all day, but he can't control the ball or lay it off properly and he clearly can't hold the ball up - which Kanu could do - when asked to play up his own. I'm afraid that ridiculous song has only encouraged his demise; it has made him think that he is much better than he his and just heaps more pressure on him.
Eboue - enough said.
I have always, and still, support Arsene Wenger to the hilt but the evidence is there for all to see, even him. We have many good youngsters who will make it through - last night showed why we paid loads for Theo - we have Merida, Vela, Denilson (has he disappeared off the planet?) but they cannot do it without solid, calm experience alongside them. United have strength all through the squad, Liverpool have a solid defence and Chelsea are just too strong physically for us at the moment.
My humble two 'penneth for what it's worth is that we need the following –
Another solid central defender - or let Djourou show that he is the player I think he can be (which just contradicts what I've said about experience!)
A strong attacking wide player (not giving Bobby his longer contract looks expensive now), Rosicky is never going to give us more than half a season, although I bet he plays in Euro 2008 and then comes back injured (ditto RvP).
And then there is goalkeeper, where I have a real dilemma. Much as I like Almunia I just don't see him as the rock steady last line that just about all top teams have (Liverpool excepted). Jens warming the bench all season means that we have no idea if Fabianski is any good but I think a top drawer addition there is a must.
And, why oh why did we let Diarra go? Exactly what we needed after 2-2 last Tuesday night.
Financially there is now no excuse for not adding to the squad and I will be hugely disappointed if we don't add some 'ready to roll' experience in the summer. This will not be an admission of failure of the past policy nor a slap in the face to the youngsters but recognition of what is required to succeed over a long season and to realise all the progress that we have made under Wenger. You win nothing in August.
Oh well, seven months of the season were great, now where's that suitcase and the sun tan lotion?
