At the time of writing it’s Sunday morning, we have yet to play United. I’m hungover and it’s Sunday Supplement on the telly with the usual collection of journos babbling away blowing smoke up Manchester United’s backside again. What made me sit up and take notice more so than other Sunday mornings was the article from the News of the World mentioned on the show. Supposedly from an ‘internal source’ entitled ‘You don’t know what your doing’ which basically for those who have not read it describes a dressing room in crisis with players not getting on and the more senior players questioning Wenger’s choices.
Now this got me thinking. On the one hand it could be the media again trying to rub salt into the wounds again when we are down as they like to do. But if this has come from a ‘Gunners source’ as reported in the article, who could it be? There are lots of ways this sort of thing can exit the dressing room and get into the hands of the red tops but let’s think about it if it did come from a player in the squad. Which one would it be? It has to be someone who in the past has done the same sort of thing before or has been a player who has not started that often in the starting line up. So for me Lehmann’s got to be top of the list.
Gallas - No. He has been outspoken in the past about players and the team also has let the emotions get to him, but he is the captain and too high profile. I can’t see it.
Gilberto - No. He is still an international captain for Brazil even when he has not played much this season has not once complained. A true professional.
Which leaves me with Lehmann.
In my previous article I had a bit of a rant at about the contradictory and embarrassing excuses coming out the club recently when we could all see that our small first team had hit the wall.
Now after Black Tuesday (as I’m calling it) a few players are holding their hands up. What we don’t need in a dressing room that’s down in the dumps at the moment and filled with introspection is Lehmann tapping the manager on the shoulder and saying ‘I told you this would happen’ like he has been doing this week.
I think that if the article did originate from a player it has to be Lehmann. Already the mad one has blasted Wenger for Tuesday stating that he’d done a better job in goal. Just like he did in the FA Cup against United and the blunders in August against Fulham and Blackburn. He also seems to forget how he cost us the Champions League final when he got sent off after thirteen minutes. Wenger’s polite response to the latest ear bashing from the mad one is to call him a ‘super professional’ on the Arsenal website. He could be of course taking the mickey out of Lehmann. How can you call a player who got sent off five times when he played for Borussia Dortmund a ‘super professional’ is beyond me.
It’s time I think for Wenger to take some action. I’m personally been a bit cheesed off with Lehmann this season. I know he has been concerned that losing his place in the team and would affect his chances to play for his country in the summer. But that is no excuse to respond by not talking to anyone at the training sessions and falling out with the manager and constantly slagging everyone off. For the sake of dressing room unity he needs to let Lehmann go on a free now. I’m not certain of the identity of the mystery originator of the News of the World’s article (if there is one) but it’s the sort of insane thing the mad one would do.
