Monday night is yoga night, except when I have a stinking cold, as I did this week. So I went to the end of the Northern Line - probably not a very sensible idea but I’m a bloke - to see the boys. I’m delighted that I did, though. 2-0 at half time and cruising. The second half was more even as the reserves did their impersonation of their elders by declaring, cricket-style; they’d established a lead that The Hammers were never going to threaten. It’s amazing how some people seem to be watching a different game, though. A man (Arsenal) in front of me opened at half time in a very friendly way to the two Hammers fans on my right saying, but for the two goals, it was an even half. Not only is that a meaningless statement, it was also entirely wrong. We were on top.
I cannot believe that Barazite is not yet 18. He looks huge and a man (think Wenger’s recent Theo / Monster comments).
Rui Fonte looked great and the back played some superb distributional balls to the wings and forwards.
Traore appears laid back, until he applies the turbocharger. He’s being groomed for the left wing.
But one boy was head and shoulders above the rest, making the first and scoring the second with an amazing left foot shot from 25+ yards and at a difficult angle: 16 year old Jack Wilshere, about whom the Arsenal website does not yet have a player profile.
No wonder Arsene told us at the last AGM that the future of the team was English. Wilshere is strong, quick, and moves the ball from either feet with great vision. His reverse angle pass for Fonte’s opener was from the first team and his second had the crowd purring. He fully deserved his standing ovation when substituted after 85 minutes.
Arsene’s cup runneth over.
