In ‘Monty Python’s Life of Brian’ there is one particularly famous sketch which recently came to mind. It’s the one that involves the People’s Front of Judea, one of many factious and bickering separatist movements, who spend more time fighting each other than they do the Romans. In this particular scene, Reg, the group’s cynical leader, as played by John Cleese, poses the question: “All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?”
This puts me very much in mind of many of our more unrealistic, irritating and impatient ‘Arsenal supporters’ who have recently proclaimed that Wenger is pretty well useless because we didn’t win a trophy again this season or buy enough players to do so. Of course when I say supporters I really mean scabby half-wits who reckon Arsenal should be p*ssing money it doesn’t have up the wall and not bringing through world-class youngsters on a more realistic budget.
If Reg were a Gooner he’d be asking: All right, but apart from some stunningly memorable nights at the Bernabeu, Old Trafford and the San Siro. Extending the playing careers of the famous back four, world class training facilities, the best football any Arsenal fan has ever seen, quite a few of those silver thingies that never appear at most clubs. Champions League football every season for a decade, revolutionising training and diets not only at Arsenal but throughout England. An incredible unbeaten season and the fabulous 49ers. A new state of the art stadium, a Champions League final and the beautiful game played beautifully. Plus of course the likes of Vieira, Petit, Overmars, Anelka, Henry, Pires, Ljungberg and Fabregas. So apart from all that, currently on a minimalist budget - what has Wenger ever done for us?
