Midfield can survive the loss of Flamini and Hleb

The personnel are already at the club to do the job, and if Hatem Ben Arfa joins up things can only get better.

Midfield can survive the loss of Flamini and Hleb

Diaby: The new Vieira?

Well another season has just flown past, and I think things from where we were last season have rather improved. We’ve come a darn sight closer to winning the league, finishing way above where the doom mongers said we would be. And some players are really coming on in their development, to say nothing of the future promise of interesting players such as Carlos Vela, Jack Wilshire and Fran Merida.

Unfortunately one thing that’s remained from last season to the this is goals from midfield. Or the lack of them I should say. Last season we didn’t convert enough from players in the middle of the park and it’s been the same again this term. Last season we where relying on Henry (when he played) to get us out of trouble and to the same extent when we have been behind at home against the likes of Villa and Middlesbrough this season the pressure gets put on Adebayor’s shoulders to get the goals. Injuries as we all know have played their part. Rosicky scored seven goals this season, six in the league. If he weren’t made out of balsawood he would have made double figures I’m sure.

Hleb, when played behind the striker improved and out on the wing was also a step up in terms of performance from last term - but not many goals from him in the league. Just two, but it looks like he’s off to Italy for some more ice cream.

Eboue, playing out on the wide right position scored none, not a sausage. Not really the swashbuckling player bombing it down the wings we are all used to. At the Champions League first leg at home against Liverpool he was visibly nervous. His theatrics on the pitch at times this season have got on the nerves of even the most forgiving Gooners. We're used to seeing players the likes of Overmars, Pires and Ljungberg doing the biz. Not this chump.

Fabregas and Walcott have been our highest contributors this season, seven and five goals a peace in the league and both are gaining in experience and getting better all the time. Fabregas starting the season scoring quite a few, with Walcott coming to form at end of the campaign. The thing with Walcott is that – as Wenger has mentioned in the past - he’s a striker by trade and that’s where he’s most likely to end up in the future. Going on the last couple of games the lad has played I think whether he plays in midfield or upfront he’s going to be really good and hopefully gets more starts next term to carry on his development. I’m sure we are going to keep Fabregas, why would he go to Real Madrid? He’s a Catalonian for a start, so if he goes back to Spain (I dread to think) it will be for Barcelona, but not for a good many years yet I hope.

With Flamini going I think Diaby could slot right in there. I don’t really think where Wenger has been playing him out on the wing suits him that much to be honest. He could be more a sort of a Vieira type of player. Tall and gangly, players bounce off him. We also have Denilson to go in there as well so no worries and hopefully we can keep hold of Gilberto for depth.

Now Wenger has definitely seen this, learned his lesson and should start strengthing the squad. At the recent Q&A with shareholders shown on Arsenal TV he mentioned he was after a creative player. Now this could be the winger Hatem Ben Arfa who we keep getting linked with. I don't know too much about him apart from that he's scored six goals this season for Lyon and has Champions League experience. We also have the possibility of the useful-looking Nacer Barazite and Fran Merida being promoted to the first team.

With our gaffer, we never know what he's going to uncover in the transfer window, which makes part of being a Gooner so pleasurable over the recent years, when we see a no name player become huge. So let’s all just ignore the papers, the silly talk and chill out and see what happens. In Wenger we trust.
