Arsenal Can Definitely Win The League Next Season

Theo – fourth striker until Eduardo’s return?

I’m definitely not a fully paid up member of the rose-tinted crew (I just linger on the sidelines!) but I genuinely do think this is possible.

This season has given these guys a first proper experience of a realistic title run-in (apart from Lehmann, Gilberto, Gallas and Toure) and they all now know what is needed whereas USA and Russia have got squads full of players almost all of whom have won at least one Premier League title. For the first three quarters of the season we were killing everyone, playing top, top football, scoring goals and in every cup. As has been said ad nauseam, we don’t have the squad to keep it up but is that actually true?

I have a feeling that, with the near total absence of Eduardo next season, Theo will be our fourth striker, as well as being used on the wing when Vela is deemed good enough to play. He said recently in an interview that he’d been promised some time up front next season. Adebayor (who’s been fantastic this season despite missing the odd sitter) and a fully fit (please god) RVP will be a hell of a strikeforce meaning goals aplenty. Bendtner, well he’s average cover for Ade really, I just hope he gets better quickly...

(Ed’s note, this offering was submitted before recent events have confirmed otherwise regarding the wantaways) Midfield is fine - Hleb, Flamini (providing he signs) Cesc, Diaby, Denilson, Merida (who might just be our Anderson) and Theo on the right when he’s not upfront. Then a new signing (touch wood) to play instead of Eboue who I’ll come to in a second As for Rosicky - who knows what will happen but hopefully he will be around for some of the season. Song is also a potentially useful cover for Flamini who can also play defence. (I'm assuming the great Gilberto will have left next season but if he doesn’t he can only add depth and experience)

In defence, it sounds like Arsene is going to sign another centre back to make Gallas and Toure work for their places and I am a Philippe Senderos fan (at least for one more season) despite his unfortunate mistakes he’s not alone in these, as Kolo and Gallas have been guilty too. Clichy (who up until the last few games has been outstanding) needs Traore to develop a bit quicker so he can be rested every now and then. If not we need another utility left back. Sagna is top top class.

As for keepers, Arsene’s not going to make wholesale changes here whether we need them or not (apart from replacing Lehmann with a 3rd choice goalie) - if he does I'll personally pay for Alisher Usmanov to have liposuction, but its seriously bloody unlikely, phew (because only Roman Abramovich has that kind of money).

Now for Eboue, I'm going to try and defend the indefensible because I personally can't see what he adds, nor can most other fans. Yet he’s been playing all season and for most of it, we’ve been winning and playing very well indeed, so he can’t be THAT bad. However I do think that he’s a pretty good back up for Sagna and part of the reason Sagna has looked so good is that Eboue's presence has enabled him to bomb forward putting in those crosses for Ade to score. Though he probably wasn’t Wenger's first choice at right midfield, injuries forced his hand and with Theo not quite ready, Eboue was the best of a bad job so to speak. Back to the bench though when we have the injured guys back.

So, two or three signings. A utility left back (?), a centre back and a right or left sided midfielder. And they don’t have to be massive names or cost Darren Bent amounts either. Who the hell had heard of Sagna or Eduardo before last season?

We've given USA a real fright this season and this really could be similar to the season before the Invincibles campaign. Ok this lot won't go 38 games unbeaten, but I do think they could really, finally be ready to become the team that they have promised to be over the duration of this season and last, and with a little more luck at Birmingham, Chelsea and Old Trafford, it could have happened a year early!
