Don’t believe the tripe!

Why should anyone believe papers and websites that are only trying to drum up their figures?

Don’t believe the tripe!

Today’s gospel, tomorrow’s chip paper

There are so many stories that the English media publish every day via newspapers and websites. Sadly these stories have as much truth as the ‘I did not see the incident’ excuse commonly said by you know who. Player contracts, transfers and managers - hell, even physios are involved! The media play the biggest part in football, especially in the Premiership during the summer break.

So do we all realise what every journalist’s ob.jective is? I think as the days have passed, the answer seems to have been lost with some people. I’ll jog your memory by summing up all media in just one sentence.

They make up stories to sell papers - or to get hits on their website. This determines how successful their business is so these figures have to be high for them to achieve. This is why they need to make up stories in a cowardly attempt to outsell their competitors; the crazier the headline, the better chance people are going to see it and eventually read the article.

I’ll give you an example which seems to have been going on since the football season ended - Alexander Hleb. He’s been slagged off ever since it was said he wanted out of the Gunners. It’s even escalated to him apparently slagging off Wenger and Fabregas. To some people, this was the convincing piece of evidence that would determine Hleb would be leaving Arsenal this summer. And who would be surprised? Criticizing your manager and fellow team-mate is not a smart move by any footballer.

However, this ‘exclusive story’ was seen by Hleb and he quickly denied his apparent words on the club’s official website. So what happens now? The Sun have clearly written something which has no truth in it at all. They surely have to be fined or even sued by Hleb for blatantly producing something which bares no truth at all. Sadly, this is not the case. I am disgusted but far from surprised that The Sun will not get punished for posting such a disgraceful story. I won’t go on as that is a completely different issue but I will presume you know what I’m getting at.

My final and most important point is this. Just because it seems like a player is going to leave us, it doesn’t necessarily mean he will. I’m not into the idea of banning anyone from expressing their views on sites such as this one, but I beg you to only make your judgments once the story is confirmed on the club’s official website. This will stop harsh words being said about the players involved such as Hleb - who will probably play for Arsenal this season anyway - I for one can see it. Also, the last thing a player wants is 60,000 people blaming him for something that he did not do. (Please don’t break my flow by mentioning the ice cream in Milan incident).

I know it can be interesting to read the rumours - and to be honest quite enjoyable - but don’t take these stories seriously until an official confirmation is made.

It may tempting to believe that we are on the verge of signing Messi, Kaka and Eto’o but you have to come terms that this is not the case.
