I fully agree with this article about Arsenal’s future being murky.
It looks to me that while the current board (which I think is past it and needs new blood and ideas) is in place, the club is going to be run in this way (into the ground). I think the board is afraid of change, but it’s better to change now than in say three years time when we could become like Newcastle or Blackburn - the close but no cigar teams.
Our achievements as the one-time “Invincibles” will be forgotten and ridiculed by the pundits who praised us previously. The suggestion of us becoming a “feeder club” when we should be a “top club” makes my blood boil but I’m afraid fellow Gooners that this it how it looks like it’s gonna be. These are testing times for the club and the fans but Wenger shoud’ve at least signed an experienced replacement before letting Gilberto leave - like when he signed Nasri as cover for Hleb.
Now that Gilberto’s gone the most experienced man at the club is Gallas. And one experienced player is not enough if you want to win trophies. When we reached the Champions League final in 2006 the majority of the team was young but we had Campbell, Pires, Bergkamp, Henry, Gilberto, Ljungberg - all experienced, members of the Invincibles and they were able to blend/mix with a young Fabregas, Diaby, Hleb, Van Persie, Hoyte, Senderos et al. The only other blokes with any sort of experience is Kolo and possibly Cesc and we need more than that.
We need someone who is around their mid 20’s like Gareth Barry or Joey Barton (who is still a great player on his day despite his personal problems) if Wenger wanted an English player. Or if he wanted to buy foreign, then someone like Xabi Alonso, Mahamadou Diarra from Real Madrid, Bouba Diop- who in the right team can be a better player, Maduro from Valencia, Demichelis from Bayern, Yaya Toure, Ruben Bustos, Denny Landzaat or even SWP or old Edu or Gio Van Bronckhorst - who as we saw at the euros can still do a job against the best.
Defence wise, somebody like Cannavaro or Sagnol. Now I love this club as much as the next Gooner but with ticket prices rising to “cover the stadium payments” (which is silly when they reportedly make £3 million a game) and no trophies being won along with our top players being sold each year, how will they fill a 60,000 seater stadium then? We will not continue to fork out our hard-earned cash to watch an under-achieving team, all because the management wont take a gamble on wages and transfer fees.
A few other pointers that the club may want to consider:
Bring in Tony Adams next year to work with Wenger and Pat Rice so he can become the next boss.
Get David Seaman in as keeper coach to work with Gerry Peyton and the current keepers
Bring back Martin Keown as defence coach.
Re-instate David Dein as we’ve clearly suffered without him especially when it comes to transfers.
Bring in the likes of Parlour, Merson, Wrighty, Kenny Samson, Lee Dixon and Charlie George to help teach players coming into the club what Arsenal is all about.
A re-shuffle of the Board of Directors as the current one is running out of time.
