Footballers speak wisdom… and bollocks

Clichy: If you want to stay out of the papers it’s not difficult

Jens Lehmann:
“I think that every player who has left Arsenal has not shone at his new club.”
Wise words indeed from the mentalist and proof that it is not only Arsenal fans who have noticed the curse of Arsene factor.

Gilberto:
“When you win things, you achieve more than anybody else. You get better contracts, and more money, anyway. I can’t blame a player who wants a good contract. But I believe if they stay at the club, they can earn good money and do a lot for the club and themselves. So if they win something, it means more and they are more appreciated by supporters”.
What a thoroughly decent and wise man. And one who will always be warmly welcomed back, unlike some.

Alan Smith on Anfield ‘89:
“We sat down in the dressing room afterwards and said that whatever happens in our career from now on, nothing is going to surpass this - how could it?”
This of course also applied to quite a few Arsenal fans as well.

Gael Clichy interviewed by Arsenal magazine:
“…Journalists have a job to do, and in my opinion, if you want to be in a newspaper you will be in a newspaper; if you don’t want to be, then you won’t be.”
Quite clearly not all our players are publicity seekers.

David Bentley:
“I know I’m coming with a big price tag, and I owe a lot to Tottenham for paying that out. I have to repay them with all my effort and heart. If the fans know I’m running my socks off for the team, hopefully they’ll love me. My friends are all season-ticket holders here. They all have Tottenham tattoos”.
The tattoos are presumably across their foreheads and some may even be spelt correctly.

Hull City chairman Paul Duffen:
“I would much rather have Dean Windass in my team than Cristiano Ronaldo.”
It appears then that Hull’s Premiership ambitions are somewhat limited.

Cristiano Ronaldo was allegedly quoted in July by Spanish sports paper AS:
“It will be fixed next week. I will go to Manchester and I will say my only desire is to play for Real Madrid and that the decision is non-negotiable.”
Which really makes you wonder why we, as fans, ever get concerned about any alleged transfer news emanating from Spain.

Adebayor on Arsenal TV:
“…at the moment my heart is with Arsenal.”
Well thanks a bunch Ade. Was that just your poor use of English or your total lack of brain power? A far more honest quote would have been
“…at the moment my pay packet comes from Arsenal.”
