It’s a new striker Arsenal need for a title challenge

Villarreal’s Santi Carloza: Would do nicely for the midfield

So, as the UEFA Champions League draw takes place pitting us against FC Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Fenerbahce under Spain’s winning coach Luis Aragones (so Thierry Henry probably won’t be joining them should he leave Barça), we have to wonder a few quick points.

Arsenal has no outstandingly tough opposition in the Premiership until Spurs come to the Emirates October 29. However, the way the team has played till now makes Newcastle this Saturday seem a greater threat than originally foreseen, as does the away fixture to Villa.

At pre-season, winning all fixtures prior to the Spurs match was a priority. Spurs will always come to spoil – not leave with the spoils – and this season will prove no different.

Frankly, this season’s Premiership title is ours although Chelsea and Manchester United will be pressing us hard. No less than 94-96 points will be required to clinch it and we need all the concentration we have to get those points, especially if we compete hard in the Champions League and FA Cup.

It is not just about not conceding goals, it is about scoring lots of them.

So no more total failures as we had against Fulham can be tolerated. No creation and no finishing – Adebayor’s effort against the post is inadequate.

And now the UEFA Champions League will provide two very tough away fixtures against Fenerbahce and Dynamo Kiev – the former very hostile and intimidating; the latter likely to be cold as well as far away – and against tough opposition.

Our squad is technically stronger than last season’s with some great new additions (Nasri, Silvestre, Ramsay), increased maturity and the drafting in of other relative youngsters (Vela, Denilson etc). But I wouldn’t wish to see Traore go off on a season’s loan nor lose Merida either. Both can start to make a vital impact by December through March. Traore impressed late last season on the left-midfield.

However, further strengthening by Sunday night is critical. Inler seems good for the midfield, de Guzman would play there nicely as well if you want a Gattuso style player. Annan I would have thought should have been very interesting indeed. Veluso is probably too difficult to negotiate now and Yaya is also likely off the radar.

One player Wenger should opt for though is Villarreal’s Santi Carloza, Spain’s number 12 who came on as substitute in the final 15 minutes of the Euro 2008 final. Trickery and vision beyond belief and he would link up a lot of our players where the passing falls down all too easily. He could be played on the right midfield or upfront, and Wenger should seriously consider him.

Adebayor’s inconsistency will be a major factor should our season end trophyless. He should be aiming for a goal a game or two goals every three games with a high ratio of assists – a telling omission from last season.

This tells me another striker is needed to finish our link-up play. I’m sure we’ve all seen how well Barry and Agbonlahor link-up and it’s a shame they are both Euro cup-tied now. Moving for Falcao at this stage would provide added depth to our strike-force and I can see he would play well alongside a combination of people – Walcott, Vela, Bendtner and a fit Eduardo should he ever find confidence enough to rediscover his game. Falcao could prove a similar style of player to RvP in terms of position, but hopefully with far deadlier finishing.

We all know how easily injuries can collect and how the loss of morale then quickens pace. Having fluked two goals away to FC Twente (Adebayor so nearly scuffed his opportunity despite great approach play down the right to get the ball to him) trouncing McClaren’s men 4-0 at home became much easier.

Greater consistency from Walcott will be another major factor. However, having him play the correct position with the right personnel is vital – similar to Rooney at Manchester compared to England.

Walcott must also learn the art of the early cross as Beckham and Giggs used to if he is to play down either flank.

The Premiership is ours for the taking this season Arsène, but you will need to think about where those goals are coming from by the end of the weekend.
