The artwork in question

Right, this sails pretty close to the wind in terms of advertorial, but as it’s a bit unusual, I’ll run with it.

Onlinegooner has been contacted by Gerald Power about the artwork you can see above.

I am writing to you regarding a painting I own. It was commissioned by Pirelli for the celebration of Arsenal winning the double in 1971 and was shown in the White City Sporting Hall of Fame. It’s a decent piece of heritage and I’ve owned it for a few years.

I came about it when the artist died and his estate was sold off. The artist worked as part of Andy Warhol’s factory and the painting is done using similar technique’s to Andy’s work.

I’m moving away from London and want to sell the painting. Ideally so it gets some public viewing… or it goes to someone inside the club. The Arsenal Museum were really interested in it, but they wanted me to donate it. I can’t really afford to do that. I had it valued - Sotheby’s say it would go for between £5,000 and £10,000.

Right, that was the email. Me again. It appears that the painting’s worth is based upon its appearance in the White City exhibition rather than the artist’s reputation. The artist himself (and I’ve done a little research) – Pietro Psaier – is something of an enigma, but he’s certainly had a few paintings sold, even if no-one seems to have met him and he hasn’t even got an entry on wikipedia. He apparently died in the Boxing Day Tsunami a few years ago. Anyway, in terms of art investment, you are not buying Andy Warhol here, but someone who reputedly used to hang around with him at the Factory. The painting’s value is based upon its history and subject matter.

Since Gerald got in touch, this story has appeared. So if you are interested in the work, I would look at buying it because of its history rather than the artist’s!

However, an auctioneer who has sold over 1,000 of his pieces refutes the questions about Pietro Psaier.

What’s certain is that someone must have painted the thing. If you are interested in the enigma of Psaier, then you can read more here.

And there’s more if you wish to google his name.

The dimensions of the painting are 50 inches x 45 inches. Additional information is available on request from the seller.
