Having got home from the Hull game, it all felt a bit weird. Usually after a defeat, I am quite calm within 20 or 30 minutes as the anger is out of my system (I take Arsenal way too seriously!!). But yesterday, the opposite was true and my anger was actually increasing at what I judge to be quite possibly the worst home performance and result I have seen in the 13 years I’ve been a season ticket holder (granted that’s not very long but even still).
I cannot recall feeling so embarrassed at a performance or result at Highbury or the Grove but today was something else. There seemed to be no spine, desire, passion, call it what you like and that is very worrying. There seemed to be a horrific sense of complacency in the players. Almost as if they thought we were only playing Hull and we’d win easily. The first half was absolutely dire. The incident when that prat Eboue passed instead of shooting when he had a clear sight of goal summed it all up.
The goal was scrappy but we needed that bit of fortune as we’re always told it’s what’s needed. And after that we should have built on it and got a second but yet again we wasted chances at crucial moments.
And then the infuriating defensive instability reared its ugly head yet again. The strike from Geovanni was wonderful, of that there is no doubt, but where was the block? Why was he given the opportunity? Geovanni is noted as a player with an ability to shoot from distance so why didn’t the players pick up on that? Because they thought that having gone 1-0 up the game was won and lo and behold that’s what happened.
I don’t know what they do on the training ground but defending corners is clearly not amongst them and what the hell does Gallas do? Ponces around and waits for the opposition to score!! It’s a total shambles!! After that our game went to pot and it became desperation but it should never have got to that in the first place!!
There are too many players in this small squad with over-sized egos and they need to be brought down a peg or two and learn that they have to knuckle down and earn points. It will not come easily. Eboue is nothing more than a waste of space and why Wenger plays him is a total and utter mystery. Adebayor did absolutely nothing at all today to justify anything we’re paying him and he needs to get the thought that he is Thierry Henry out of his system.
One defeat is not a crisis but I fear it’s bigger than that. Man Utd won’t lose at home to Hull, Liverpool won’t lose at home to Hull and Chelsea won’t lose at home to Hull. Wenger said afterwards that the players lacked “focus”. Therein lies the problem and what will he do about it?
