Changes needed for Porto game

Let’s get the shocking Hull result out of our system as quickly as possible

Changes needed for Porto game

Appiah – Should be on the books by now.

Now I, like many Gooners, still can’t believe we were beaten by Hull City, and at home of all places. However, after the way we have been defending this season at times - especially at set pieces - I’m not surprised and I saw this coming, though not against Hull.

Their equaliser was a top quality goal and you have to give Geovanni - a player we could have done with - credit. You could put four ‘keepers on the line and still not save that. But for the second goal it was Gallas again - as at Fulham - going to sleep at the vital moment. Wenger hit the nail on the head in the post match interview, “Commitment-wise they were superior”, which Hull City were and that is not acceptable. I know losing any match is hard to take but it’s the way we lost it. I’m sorry, but if you want to win trophies you have to beat teams like Hull.

This week’s training should be 90 per cent on set pieces - both attacking and defending them - as we are still coming unstuck because of them. I’d also sit the team down and make them watch a DVD of the whole game and make them understand how stupid they made themselves look and how much they let us down.

I know it may sound like a gamble but I would leave Gallas out against Porto to take him out of the spotlight and put Djourou or Silvestre alongside Toure. This way he can see things the way we, the fans, see them in the stands. I’d also put Ade on the bench and give Vela and Bendtner a go for an hour and see how they get on.

The midfield needs sorting as well. They said in the weekend’s papers that Mineiro, a proven Brazillian international in the Gilberto mould, played in a specially arranged match at Colney and the boss left at half time - seemingly unconvinced - eventually letting Chavski snap him up. I think at the moment the boss can’t afford to be so picky.

Another free agent is a man I’ve been calling for the boss to sign since the end of last season - Stephen Appiah. He’s captain of Ghana, 27 years old, big, strong in the tackle, bags of energy and has a bit of pace too. He possesses a thunderous shot like Michael Essien and he’s a bully, which we haven’t had since the Petit-Vieira days. He’s the perfect partner for Cesc.

I just hope that the Hull game - like the Fulham result - gives the players and coaching staff a real kick up the jacksy, if the kids’ virtuoso performance against Sheff Utd didn’t already. Now let’s put the Hull match behind us and let’s see what the boys come up with against Porto.
