It’s becoming a growing trend from this Arsenal side, turning on the style against tough opposition but struggling against smaller teams. The style and fluency of the football we played on Tuesday night was simply inconceivable at times. Porto, one of Europe’s biggest clubs, were made to look like a Sunday league side for large periods of the game. Technically our players are in a league of their own, and when they are given time and space to play they will tear opponents apart.
The big question however is why they cannot do this against the supposedly “smaller clubs” week in week out? The performance on Saturday was abysmal in a game that should have been a guaranteed three points. Wenger has criticised the players’ motivation for the game. We have a squad filled with future superstars but if they find it hard to motivate themselves now, when they should be hungry to prove themselves, then how will the Boss be able to motivate them when they have reached their peak?
Against Porto every player was fired up for the game and wanted to show how good they really were. This should be the case every week. If Arsenal want to win the league the team will have to give 110% week in week out for the rest of the campaign.
One issue that is currently worrying me is the concentration of Gallas, Toure and Denilson. Although they are not the only guilty parties, they have stood out due to the importance of their positions and must improve if they are to win anything this year.
Every year the Gunners are vulnerable from set pieces and this year is no different. So far this season they have conceded four goals and three of these have been from corners. This is not good enough for a team supposedly challenging for major honours. Also, why do Arsenal not score more goals from set plays? This is an area which should be worked on regularly due to the number of corners won in a game, but it appears it is being ignored due to the number of them, especially taken by Cesc, that do not beat the first man. At present, there is a great deal of height in the area with Gallas, Ade and Bentner. There’s also Toure and Sagna who, despite their lack of height, are both great headers of the ball.
Despite my negativity, I feel that this side - once Rosicky and Diaby return - are more than capable of winning the league and/or Champions League this season. At this moment in time we look weak with Denilson in the team, but with Diaby’s return getting closer by the day he could fill the void left by Flamoney.
On Tuesday we were in a rich vein of form and probably should have won by six or seven. RVP was a class act and I was gutted when Wenger took him off, especially when the penalty was awarded, as it would have been the perfect way to seal his hat-trick. Adebayor really should have grabbed himself a hat-trick and Samir Nasri would have scored if Theo had delivered a better ball. But overall 4-0 isn’t bad against the Portuguese champions.
This team is growing in confidence with every game and, with an improvement in concentration, can go the distance this year.
