I have read the online editorial about the team’s poor start (‘It might just be a long, long season’); I honestly think you are being a bit too harsh and too depressed too early on. Yes, of course it would be nice for Arsenal to have more players by now and I agree they should have bought more; that said, the question remains - who is available who fits the bill and is within our price range and wages structure?
Thuram would have been a wonderful short term buy, but Barcelona will have always offered more money than Arsenal. Similarly, I wonder if Gallas – if Chelsea agrees to sell him to Arsenal – will accept less than he can get at Chelsea or in Italy. Who else should we get? Curtis Davies for £8m or more? What makes anyone think he is better than Djourou or Senderos? I liked the Ghanaian player we have had on trial who was so good for Ghana at the World Cup, so I remain hopeful there. He is said to be available for £0.5m, i.e. 1/20th of Curtis Davies' price. I know which one I would take.
Left back: we all know what a nightmare that position has been for a year; personally, I think the club should bite the bullet and be rid of AC3. I know he may be having a change of heart (allegedly), but I think the damage is done. So who should replace him? If Clichy is too injury-prone, then a swap with Bridge would be fine; or why not Konchesky or Ricardo Gardner from Bolton (if he is still there!)? I think Clichy will be fine and I think as back-up Hoyte and Flamini will be fine too. Sure they will make mistakes, all defenders do. Toure was at fault for the Zagreb goal just as much as Hoyte was for the Man City penalty; are you suggesting we drop Toure? Cole has been caught out before with balls over the top (Ajax at Highbury in the CL a couple of years ago for example); he may be a good player, but he is not perfect. And I have to say his attitude stinks.
Midfield – not enough experience? Yes and no – presumably people want Fabregas, so he has to play Gilberto or someone similar alongside. Diaby is presumably the long term PV4 replacement (and Muamba is presumably the back-up), so if we get Mascherano, where does that leave Diaby? Lauren can and will fill there I am sure.
Wide players – here I am probably in agreement with you; we should try 4-3-3, but that would mean TH14 on his own up front. He drifts wide, so there would be even less people in the box than now… AW has surely accepted he has to play RVP, Adebayor, or someone (may be the young Scot who is said to be on trial) alongside him.
On balance I can't see AW switching to 4-3-3, unless – and may be this is not such a bad idea – the man on the left is TH14. We could have Fabregas, Gilberto and Mascherano if he comes or Lauren or Diaby or Flamini or even Song as the three in the middle. That would of course mean Rosicky would have to play on the right. I can't see Fabregas and Rosicky in centre midfield together myself.
But if we went 4-4-2, does that mean Rosicky would be best used in the Bergkamp role behind TH14 and we would then have RVP or Freddie on the left? Then again Tevez might come…
All these possibilities, compounded by the injuries and uncertainties over Cole and Reyes, show how impossible a job AW has. Fortunately by midnight on August 31st, it will all be clear!! You never know the team, playing 4-4-2, might be:
Buffon; Eboue, Toure, Gallas, Cole; Rosicky, Fabregas, Mascherano Ljungberg; Tevez, Henry! Subs: Lehmann, Senderos, Gilberto, RVP, Adebayor etc.
Now that would be nice. Sorry; I have just realised I had forgotten about Theo… where does he fit in and in place of whom?
