Money is at the root of Arsenal’s problems

Arrogance runs from the playing staff through to the boardroom

Money is at the root of Arsenal’s problems

Audi R8. Model comes as optional extra. And you know who is paying for this…

It’s the $64,000 dollar question - why are we seeing so many spineless and careless performances from an Arsenal team that is obviously very talented?

57,000 Gooners witnessed yet another horror show yesterday as eleven complacent young men strolled around, wondering why Villa didn't just let us play beautiful football, give us the three points and then p*ss off back to mid-table mediocrity. We’ve all got our thoughts about what is going wrong but I think the over-riding problem at Arsenal is money - too bloody much of it being paid to players that have won nothing yet.

The culture at our Club has completely changed, mainly because of the wealth on offer to them and that has had a massive, negative impact on performances. Win, lose or draw a couple of hundred grand arrives in each players’ bank account at the end of every month but it’s not making them play any better.

The wealthier they get, the less they seem to care and the less the manager seems to be able to inspire them. In fact I firmly believe that the 89-91 team would comfortably see off Messrs Denilson, Song, Bendtner, Eboue & co.

It makes me really, really sad to see (and it can no longer be denied) that the current squad, indeed the whole club has developed an arrogant culture as they have become financially richer and richer, thereby removing themselves further and further from the reality of a worsening situation. I say financially richer because that is the only improvement that has been made in the last four years.

Absolutely everyone at Arsenal - the directors, managerial staff, players and their agents have profited massively from the huge cash influx into the game. They have become inebriated on the millions being poured in by supporters and from top to bottom, the whole club is acting as if money is their sole motivation. Watching lazy gits like Bendtner and Denilson underperform is bad enough but paying £2,000 per season to watch it makes it so much worse.

A decision was taken some years ago to prioritise wealthy, corporate fans (who sit in silence but pay large amounts) over the supporters that create a positive atmosphere. Away fans are allowed to stand unchallenged (I sat directly behind the Man Utd fans and they stood for 90 minutes) whilst we are constantly told to sit, or face ejection. Billionaire Mike Ashley can down a pint at his seat but try it for yourself and see what happens to you.

Talking of alcohol, I stayed behind to drown my sorrows after yesterday’s shambles but within ten minutes, 20 or so dayglo clad stewards (each of whom failed charm school) were herding us downstairs - the only thing missing was a shout of "Raus, raus!!"

Before being so rudely interrupted I watched bemused as the usual procession of Bentleys, Rolls Royce, Audi R8s or Aston Martins left the club car park. Oh well – at least I got a seat on the tube!

What was once a friendly and welcoming club is turning into an unfriendly money making machine, simply because young players are demanding higher and higher wages, whilst threatening to leave unless said wage rise takes place. Stand up Mr Adebayor and show us your wage slip - £320,000 per month!!

I just hope those players – and the manager and directors - noticed that the stadium was more than half empty when the final whistle blew as the new breed of “fan” voted with their feet.

Genuine Arsenal supporters deserve so much better!!
