Clichy for captain

Goodbye Gallas... but who's next?

Clichy for captain

Clichy – Good choice for skipper?

I am 20 years old, I have been a devoted season ticket holder for 13 years. First time contributor. The reason for this is because I have never seen such a crisis of confidence since I have supported this great footballing institution. I currently study journalism so I know to take some comments with a pinch of salt and how they can be manipulated for the readership for maximum effect. However Gallas' comments are more than a step too far.

The way to sum up William Gallas is as a Kiss and Tell Girl you read about every Sunday in the red tops. Gallas was out of order with his comments. There is a time and a place for making such remarks. He should keeps his comments to himself but it is becoming an all to common feature of his to air his views on Arsenal's less senior players who perform to their levels publicly.

Why? Because it fuels his ego and relinquishes his own inadequacies in the team. The man has undoubted talent, we all accept this but his leadership qualities have always left a lot to be desired. For me he sums up the state of the team at the moment. He is glad to show his commitment when things are going well (after the Man Utd game) but is even quicker to voice his displeasure when things are not going according to plan (Birmingham City away).

For me this is not what a CAPTAIN is supposed to do. A CAPTAIN should pick up these broken pieces and say to his younger charges: "Follow me lads, we are going to get through this." Two great examples of this are Adams and Vieira. Both did it in there own way but both did their job supremely effectively. Adam motivated the players by vocally encouraging them and Patrick dominated games with his physical superiority.

Gallas must now move on to pastures new. I feel he always struggled to fit in with the more youthful generation of players at Arsenal - especially after the more senior players like Jens, Gilberto and TH14 left the club. All the members of this team are now younger and he struggles to communicate with them.

The question now is who will replace him???

Cesc seems to be struggling more than ever this season with the burden of being of being the leader and creative spark of the side. He looks tired and burnt out already and we are only in November. Maybe next season if he wants the job and is fully committed to cause and tasks that lay before him.

Next candidate is Manuel Almunia. Experienced, good communicator and seems to have the respect of the players. But his form lately has been a bit inconsistent and Wenger seems unconvinced by his recent displays. The main positive is that he has already lead the side this season and is not as likely to go blabbing to the media about the teams shortcomings.

Another possibility could be the maverick, the unpredictable, injury prone but all together genius of Robin Van Persie. This may seem a long shot but so was Gallas. RVP is undoubtedly a brilliant footballer, we miss him so much when he does not play. He has the ability to turn a defence inside out and back to front in the blink of an eye. But obviously he may end being another Gallas. On the other hand the responsibility may transform the mischief making Dutchman into a man. This seems like a long shot as I cannot see Wenger taking another chance with a free talking spirit as our leader on the pitch.

This I feel leaves us with one choice. The ever present, fully committed, consistently consistent left back Gael Clichy. Gael I feel will give us what is needed. He leads be example, he is the only player who can honestly say every game of the season:" I have given my all today."

He made the mistake against Spurs and yes he did gave away a very unlucky and highly disputable penalty at Birmingham, causing Gallas to act like small child and go off in a petulant huff as if he was five year old. Gael though represents what is needed in this time of crisis. He has shown a tremendous bout of character to bounce back after the Birmingham incident. This could have scarred him for life but he has shown a stern backbone that is needed in this time of transition. He will always show and give his all. Whether it maybe Man Utd or West Brom, Clichy will guarantee you maximum effort, maximum proficiency and is respected by the players for this. He can marshal the backline as the fledging talent of Johan Djourou comes in to replace our departing ex-captain.

Also with vice-captain Almunia backing him up there is a recipe for success. You would then have two highly professional players who would not be stumbling out of a west end club with a cigarette hanging out his fat gob. If I was Le Boss I would make Clichy the captain in the short term until the end of the season when Cesc should be included in the running. Because at the moment he has too much weight on his young shoulders and I feel this could crush him.

So who will be the next Gunner to take up this cherished chalice? All I hope is that is does not turn in to a poisoned one.

Finally, the cynical among us will also realise Gallas has a book to promote and this a cheap marketing ploy. If it proves to be so then it shows the man’s true colours and that his only motivation is to improve his bank balance by slagging off his fellow teammates and professionals. We would to well do well to get rid of this selfish greed as it taints the reputation of our great and beloved club.
