Arsenal winger Chloe Kelly praised the Gunners’ “amazing” fans after she sparked a remarkable comeback over West Ham at Meadow Park.
Two goals from Amber Tysiak gave the visitors a shock 2-0 lead, but Kelly’s goal before half time, her first since a deadline day loan move from Manchester City, halved the deficit.
Shekiera Martinez restored West Ham’s two-goal cushion early on in the second half, before three goals in just six minutes saw Arsenal complete a breathtaking comeback.
Asked by the Gooner Fanzine about how myuch the Meadow Park atmosphere has changed since her first spell with the Gunners, Kelly joked “Yeah, it’s a little different!”
“It’s amazing to be here. My [second] debut was obviously at the North London Derby at the Emirates, and then to come back here where I played my first game was incredible, the fans are amazing.”
The 27-year-old came off the bench twice for England in the February international break, despite only being called up to the squad after Arsenal teammate Beth Mead withdrew due to injury.
“It’s not about proving myself, it’s about showing what I’m capable of,” Kelly told the Gooner.
“And every time I step out onto the pitch and wear the badge it’s an honour to be there.
“I think playing international football, that’s never a given. I need to work hard for my shirt and I know that, and I didn’t have a lot of minutes previous to the camp.
“So I understand selection procedures and I know that I need to be at my best and that I’m going to keep working hard every day to do so.”
“It was great, to be away with the team, the unbelievable environment that we have is great to be in and around.
“To come back here and our focus turned straight back onto West Ham, so I think it was a great international break. To be able to get some minutes as well was important, and then coming back here, it’s an incredible group to come back to.”
