Arsenal Women interim head coach Renee Slegers spoke to the media ahead of Friday’s Women’s Super League game against Brighton and Hove Albion. Here are five things we learned:

Lotte Wubben-Moy is back in training

“Lotte’s positive. She’s training with us. Laura [Wienroither] did big parts of the training today as well, so they’re both progressing really well.”

Arsenal’s Women’s Champions League game against Bayern Munich being moved “a bump in the road”

“I understand the frustration that is being discussed in the media as well. I think it’s a very hard dilemma for the club. Two big teams, competing in competitions, but I think what Arsenal has been doing really well is pushing the quality of women’s football for a very long time.

“So I think this is a bump in the road, but what Arsenal has done for women’s football over time is very strong.”

High praise for Dario Vidosic’s Brighton

“I think they’re a very good side. I don’t know exactly the numbers on how many players they’ve recruited but they got in a lot of new players for this season, big players.

“So I think that’s a big part of why they’re performing so well. And I think the coach has done a good job on getting a good structure into the team.”

Reaction to Edu’s departure as sporting director

“I think he’s meant a lot for the women’s team at Arsenal, he’s meant a lot for the whole club. Sorry he’s leaving, but he got a really good opportunity so I wish him all the best.

“The structure that we have in place here is very strong, it’s not dependent on one person, so I think what Arsenal build is much bigger than that, so I feel comfortable with the structure that we have.”

Improving on Sunday’s draw against Manchester United

“We talk about being ruthless in both boxes, so that’s still an area that we really focus on, we’ve been focusing on it this week. Set-pieces is part of it. I think looking statistically we’ve been doing well in the WSL defending set-pieces- that was the stats before Man United.

“I don’t think we should get too emotional about the goal we concede on Sunday. It’s obviously a part that we want to work on, in our own box and offensive box, but I think it gets quite emotional as well.”
