Prologue:

Mikel Arteta's side have passed test after test this term so far, whether it be winning at Aston Villa and bitter rivals Spurs, laying a marker down at billionaire moneybags Manchester City, not to mention displaying an imperious Champions League attitude when brushing aside PSG earlier this week.

Where they have struggled somewhat is against sides they are expected to beat. As witnessed by the 1-1 draw against Brighton, albeit thanks to dreaful refereeing that led to Declan Rice receiving the first red card of his career, after picking up a ridiculously soft - and completely inconsistent second yellow.

Ditto, Leciester City at the Emirates last weekend, when the match appeared to be heading for a 2-2 draw after the Gunners threw away a two goal lead, only for Leandro Trossard to forced Wilfred Ndidi to put through his own net, prior to Kai Havertz forcing home a fourth, as Arteta's team sealed a last-gasp victory in injury time.

Gooners everywhere will be hoping for less scares and more strikes this weekend against the struggling Saints.

Aaron Ramsdale returns

The Gunners welcome back a popular, familiar face on Saturday as Aaron Ramsdale returns with Russell Martin's south coast side.

The keeper with a big personality much-loved by fans, left the club during the summer in a deal worth up to £25million, 12 months after signing a new deal, then immediately losing his No21 spot to David Raya.

Form

Ramsdale and the Saints, remain winless after six games, as the Gunners aim to keep pace with table-toppers Liverpool, who face Crystal Palace in day's earlier kick-off.

Arsenal vs Southampton team news

Ben White and Jurrien Timber are in contention, despite recent injury scares. White missed the wins over Leicester and PSG while Timber was replaced at half-time against the French giants, with a 'muscular' issue.

Speaking on Friday, Arteta confirmed the duo are “close” as is Takehiro Tomiyasu as he bids to make his first appearance of the campaign.

Oleksandr Zinchenko and Martin Odegaard are still out.

Saints' Gavin Bazunu, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Jack Stephens and William Smallbone are missing.

Head to head

The last time these two teams met in the league, they shared a 1-1 draw and a 3-3 draw, as the Gunners fell short in the title race. The latter arguably cost Ramsdale his No1 spot after errors led to the relegation doomed Saints taking a costly lead.

Draws: 30

Defeats: 23
