Three Things We Learned after Arsenal's 1-1 draw at Chelsea
Gooner Fanzine print writer Ian Mills reflects on Arsenal's draw at Chelsea
Despite taking a second half lead we had to settle for a share of the spoils in a hard-fought London derby, writes Ian Mills.
Here are three things that stood out for me.
1 - Odegaard is crucial to this team –
Our supremely gifted captain has been sorely missed in his 12-game absence and it was perhaps no surprise that on his first start back from injury it was his pass that unlocked the Chelsea defence to allow Gabi Martinelli to put us ahead from close range on the hour mark.
While understandably a little ring rusty, the Norwegian was at the heart of most of our attacking play and you can sense that his mere presence on the pitch lifted those in red and white around him.
The International break will hopefully allow him extra training time as he is going to be needed from now until the end of the campaign if we are to have a successful season.
2 - More dropped points as gap widens –
While it would be hard to argue we merited all three points in this game, it was our fourth draw and all of those have come after we have taken the lead.
In truth, we did not stay ahead for long enough to really press home our advantage in this match however luck continues to evade us. Leandro Trossard’s inadvertent touch in injury time took a tap in off the boot of Kai Havertz.
We could have beaten Brighton, we should have beaten Manchester City and Liverpool escaped with a draw after Jakub Kiwor was penalised for a ‘foul’ before Jesus found the net in injury time.
It is incredible to think that just as City suffer their first real dip in form for six seasons, we decide to only take two points from a possible 12.
Liverpool are going like a train at the moment and it is going to take some shift in momentum for them and us to close that gap despite not having even reached mid-November.
3 - Reset and refocus –
While we will not be able to take a sunshine break in Dubai it is crucial that we use this international break to get our injured players fit.
Clearly neither Declan Rice or Bukayo Saka were 100% fit yesterday and I hope common sense prevails and they both withdraw from the England squad.
While keeping everything crossed for our internationals players who will be going away, I hope we can keep a core group together at London Colney to train and work collectively as our season is starting to be written off just after Bonfire Night and a little of siege mentality would not go amiss right now.
